Hair Transplant India: Pro and Cons

Pro Cons
Low Prices: Hair transplants in India are relatively inexpensive, the average cost per graft is 1.34 USD, this is 1.64 USD cheaper than the global average. Standards: UK or US hospitals have high hygienic and technical standards. The qualification of the doctors is also more consistent in the UK. Indian hospitals are not required to adhere to the same standards of hygiene.
Specialists: Many clinics in India only perform hair transplants. Some doctors in UK and US also do other cosmetic surgery which implies they are less focused on improving their hair transplantation skills and knowledge. Other Expenses: Travel expenses can be very costly, and there are the additional hotel costs as well as extra money spent on meals while in India as a medical tourist.
Relatively close: Hair transplant clinics in India are an excellent option to save money for patients from Australia and New Zealand, where the cost per graft is comparable to the USA and UK. In-Person consultation: Personal consultation cannot take place before the hair transplantation due to the distance. This means that the patient cannot get a first-hand idea of the personnel, hygiene and methods before deciding on a clinic. Aftercare will also take place remotely.
Tourism: A hair transplantation in India can be combined with an exotic vacation where you can see many historical sites.

Hair transplantation cost in India

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery estimated the average global cost of a hair transplant being 6,208 USD per surgery, from a total number of 735,312 hair restoration surgical procedures performed in 2019.

The ISHRS also found that the average number of grafts in a hair transplantation was 2,083 in 2019, we used this mean to calculate the average cost per graft globally which we found came out to 2.98 USD per graft. However, we found there is an average price per graft of 1.34 USD, making India’s clinics 1.64 USD cheaper than the global average. We also found that for 2,500 grafts the procedures had a total average cost of 3,350 USD:

Operating and labor costs in India are not as high when compared to countries like the USA or the UK, which explains why they are able to offer transplants at a cheaper rate. In addition, India has the ability to manufacture it’s own medical devices for hair transplants which reduces the cost of shipping and taxes for the clinics.

Hair transplant methods in India

A hair transplantation consists of three phases: removal, storage and insertion of the hair follicles. There are several different methods by which this process is accomplished, the two most commonly used methods in India are the FUT and FUE methods. FUE is most common in India.

Regardless of the method the insertion process is the same, small recipient channels are prepared on the bald areas, into which the transplants are inserted with angled surgical tweezers by the surgeon or robot.

The FUE and FUT methods differ in the extraction and removal technique of the hair follicles.

The FUT method, also known as the Strip Method, involves a strip of skin being removed from the donor area. The donor area is usually located at the back of the head where the hair is resistant to the hormone, DHT which causes hair loss. The strip of skin is then dissected and prepared into individual hair grafts, which are inserted into the recipient channels the surgeon had prepared. Roughly 30% of all hair transplants worldwide are performed using the FUT method.

Natural hair groups consisting of one to four individual hair roots are extracted from the donor area using a very thin hollow needle with the FUE method. These hair grafts are then inserted at the desired locations.

The Direct Hair Implantation, or the DHI method, is the latest advancement of the FUE technique. It is the most preferred technique in India. “CHOI Implanter Pens” are used to transplant hair follicles directly without opening the hair recipient channels beforehand. The advantages of this method include a reduced procedure time, higher survival rate, and reduced trauma to the scalp.

The ARTAS method is a robotic development of the traditional FUE method. The removal phase of the hair transplant process is mechanically supported. The ARTAS method is not widely practiced, as it is very expensive for the clinics to purchase the ARTAS equipment and maintain the repairs. This significantly raises the price of the hair transplant for the patient.Patients who want the ARTAS method to be used for their hair transplant must be willing to completely shave their head. In order for the ARTAS machinery to identify individual hair grafts, the patients must have dark hair that contrasts against light skin. In most cases the ARTAS robot will not work for individuals with curly hair.

According to our hair transplant statistics the motorized FUE method is currently the most common technique among hair surgeons:

The FUT method is a preferred option for patients who require a large number of grafts transplanted. While the candidate is still young, they will heal more quickly from the surgery as they have a more elastic scalp. This method will also avoid thinning the donor area hair as the rest of the donor area besides the strip of skin which is removed remains full and dense.

The FUE method doesn’t leave behind a strip scar the way an FUT procedure will. This method works well for patients who don’t need as many grafts transplanted, desire a minimally invasive procedure, and lack a full, dense donor area.

How to choose a hair transplant clinic in India

There are many factors which are important to consider when choosing a hair transplant clinic. It can be overwhelming for an inexperienced patient to find the right questions to ask to obtain the information needed to select a clinic. Here is a list of the questions our experts have found most helpful to ask, or factors to look for when researching clinics:

  • Quality is more important than quantity: The best hair transplant clinics only perform 1-2 hair transplants per day. This allows the surgeon to completely focus on one patient and have a higher degree of involvement in the procedure. The more surgeon involvement, the better the results of the hair transplantation tend to be.
  • What parts of the procedure are performed by the surgeon? Technicians will perform a large part of the hair transplant procedures when a clinic takes on a large number of transplants in a single day. The technicians have less experience and education than the surgeons, lowering the quality of the transplant.
  • Surgeon qualifications: Memberships with various hair restoration societies is a good sign of the quality of a surgeon’s work. These societies only accept surgeons who have proved they have high standards of hygiene, quality, education, and experience. Some examples of these include the International Alliance of Hair Restoration Surgeons (IAHRS), the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), and the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS). An international qualification shows a high degree of skill and experience from the surgeon and clinic.
  • Proof of the results of their work: It is important to look at a number of before-and-after photos from the surgeon or hair transplant clinics to get an idea of the quality of their work. It is important these photos are high quality with appropriate lighting.
  • Read the reviews or meet their former patients: Former patients often provide reviews online which give insight to the care a patient can expect to receive from a hair transplant clinic. You can learn how the clinic treats the patients throughout the entire process, including consultation, preparation for the procedure, and aftercare.
