Hair Transplant Cost UK

Our cost study found that hair transplants performed in the UK are among the most expensive in the world. They are cheaper than transplants performed in Canada or the United States however, with an average cost per graft of 2.35 £ (3.22 USD). The lowest price we found in the UK was 1.65 £ (2.26 $) per graft with the highest being 2.91 £ (3.98 $) per graft. The average total cost of hair transplantations is 6,001.32 £ (8,218.17 $) for a hair restoration with 2,500 grafts. According to our hair transplant statistics most of the people have a medium hair loss degree (Norwood scale type 4) and need between 2,500 and 3,500 grafts.

The UK has higher labor costs than countries like Mexico or Turkey which increases the price of hair transplantation. The UK also has higher standards of hygiene and experience for their surgeons and clinics, this means that patients can have a greater degree of trust in the clinics here than in another country. Patients therefore pay a premium price for premium standards and care. Most hair transplants are performed in London and in Manchester.

Here is a table summarizing the data our experts have gathered for clinics in the UK:

The price of treatment, while important, should not be the deciding factor. It is far more important to assess the quality of the doctor and clinic. An excellent way to evaluate the quality of treatment is to read the experience reports from previous patients for the respective doctors in our results section and analyze the before-and-after pictures: Checkout Results

Hair Transplant Cost US

Hair transplants in the US had one of the most expensive prices for each of the countries we examined, with an average cost per graft of 5.44 USD. Our experts found the cheapest price being 2.80 USD per graft and the most expensive being 10.50 USD per graft. For transplants of 2,500 grafts, we found the average total cost is 13,610.00 USD.

The US has comparable standards to the UK for hygiene and experience required from their surgeons and clinics. This explains why both countries are among the most expensive locations in the world for hair transplants. Patients who get hair transplants in the US and UK can be sure they are receiving high quality care, and the surgeons they go to will have consistent results. However, the US has higher labor costs than the UK causing the average price to be higher in the US.

Here is a table summarizing the data our experts have gathered for clinics in the US:

Hair Transplant Cost Turkey

In recent years Turkey has become one of the most popular locations for medical tourism, especially for cosmetic procedures like hair transplants. Clinics in Turkey offer some of the cheapest hair transplant options in the world, often times with the price of flights, hotel accommodation, and transportation to the clinic included. In our study we found that there is an average cost per graft of 1.07 USD, making procedures here almost half the cost of transplantations in the UK and less than a third of the cost of transplantations in the US. The average total cost for 2,500 grafts is 2,675.61 USD.

Medical tourism is one of the largest industries in Turkey, leading to clinics cutting their prices in order to edge out their competition. They are able to cut their costs more easily than clinics in the US or UK because Turkey does not have the same standards of hygiene and experience, nor are their labor costs as high. Furthermore, the US and UK have to import the machinery used in hair transplantations which adds the cost of shipping, taxes, and import fees into their pricing. Turkey manufactures their own machinery so the clinics do not have to account for those additional costs.

Willingness to travel abroad for the hair transplant

Due to the low prices, there is room in the Turkish hair transplantation market for inexperienced or low-quality clinics to attract customers. These clinics are commonly the cause for botched hair transplants as the procedures are often performed by technicians rather than the surgeons that have specialized in hair implants. This is not to say that all low-cost clinics in Turkey for hair transplants are poor options that will have undesirable results. As a patient it is important to ensure you are going to an accredited clinic which has been certified by medical associations like the ISHRS.

There are three categories of clinics in Turkey, which are separated by price level among other factors. The most affordable options are the all-inclusive clinics who provide the package deals mentioned previously. The second category are of medium price with more personalized care than the all-inclusive category. The third category of clinics offer premium care with the most consistent, high quality results but, these clinics are the most expensive option.

Our experts are happy to point you in the right direction towards a clinic in each category you can trust. You can find more information on our page about hair transplants in turkey.

Is a hair transplantation in Turkey worthwhile?

The cost of a hair transplant in Turkey is much cheaper than in other countries like the US and the UK. Is it still a cheaper alternative for medical tourists with the addition of plane tickets, hotel accommodation, and meal prices?

Flights to Istanbul cost an average of 181 USD each way from the UK, which means one would spend 362 USD total for flight expenses. An overnight stay in a reasonable hotel costs roughly 97 USD. If one assumes that one day is necessary for the journey, one for acclimatization and pre-treatment, one for the operation, one for regeneration and post-treatment and one for departure, the cost for the four nights of accommodation is approximately 388 USD. If we calculate with an average of 36 USD per day for meals, with half the meals per day for arrival and departure, the total is 144 USD. You would have to add about 894 USD to the cost of the hair transplant. The calculation example is greatly simplified and in reality, other additional costs are possible but would continue to be relatively cheap, since Turkey is a very inexpensive country.

All 163 hair transplant clinics in turkey

Since hair transplants are often charged per graft, hair transplantation in Turkey is only worthwhile after a certain number of grafts. For example, let’s assume that you would need to have 500 grafts transplanted: In Turkey this would cost 535 USD (at 1.07 USD per graft) and in the UK 1,610 USD (at 3.22 USD per graft). If you add the 894 USD of additional costs to the price of the procedure in Turkey, you would spend 1,429 USD. Thus, hair transplantation in Turkey for even a small number of grafts would be cheaper than in the UK. The so-called “break even” i.e., the point at which the costs are identical in both countries, would be about 420 grafts. However, since a large number of grafts are usually transplanted, electing to have the procedure performed in Turkey is financially worthwhile for the majority of patients – even with additional costs.

In addition, many clinics in Turkey now offer “all-inclusive packages”. These packages often cover all additional costs besides the actual operation – from flights to hotel costs. This simplifies the process for patients and makes Turkey an even more appealing alternative for residents in the UK.

Comparison to ISHRS Census

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery estimated a total number of 735,312 hair restoration surgical procedures were performed in 2019, with the average global cost being roughly 6,208 USD per surgery. The ISHRS also found that the average number of grafts in a hair transplantation was 2,083 in 2019, we used this mean to calculate the average cost per graft globally which we found came out to 2.98 USD per graft.

The UK has an average cost per graft of 3.22 USD making it 0.24 USD more expensive than the global average. Although this doesn’t seem like a large difference initially it adds up very quickly when patients receive an average of 2,083 grafts.

The US has an average cost per graft of 5.44 USD making it 2.46 USD more expensive than the global average. Hair transplantations in the US are incredibly expensive, because of this medical tourism is a popular way for US patients to reduce the cost of a hair transplantation. Even with the addition of flights, hotel accommodation, and meal prices the cost difference will remain quite high.

In contrast, Turkey is 1.91 USD cheaper than the global average, making it the most affordable location to receive a hair transplant. With an average price of 2,675.61 for 2,500 grafts, patients would save lots of money by traveling to Turkey for this procedure instead of having it performed in the US or UK.

Factors That Affect Hair Transplant Costs?

Hair transplant costs have steadily dropped in the last couple of years, the main reasons for this being increased competition and technological advancement. As it becomes easier for the doctors to perform the transplantation they do not need to charge as high of prices as they can also see more patients. This has made hair transplantation a more affordable and widely available option for those suffering from androgenetic hair loss.

Another major factor affecting the cost of your hair transplant will be the number of grafts required to achieve the result you desire. The more severe your hair loss, the larger the area that must be covered. As most clinics charge by the number of grafts the difference of even 500 grafts will add a considerable amount to the price.

A hair transplant can have varying degrees of specialist care, sometimes the doctor is involved in every step of the process while in other cases they are only present for the initial consultation and design of the hairline. The more involvement the doctor has with your transplantation the greater the cost. Although many experienced technicians can deliver quality results, there isn’t the same level of consistent results or skill.

In addition, certain methods cost considerably more than others. The ARTAS method is the most expensive because the company who produces the machinery charges clinics a high price to use their technology. Many patients believe the quality of ARTAS transplants to be superior because it has a greater use of technology, however there is little difference in results compared to other methods according to several doctors. The DHI method is another expensive transplant technique, it works similarly to FUE method but involves a specialist tool which increases the cost. The two most common techniques are FUE and FUT making them more affordable. FUE is more expensive than FUT as it involves less scarring which is a high priority for patients. However, the technological advancements have made FUE with motorized extraction even cheaper than the FUT with Strip method. Also, the hair type can affect the price, e.g. straight or curly hair or afro hair.

Most common hair transplant method

The final factor affecting the cost of your hair transplant is location. As we have shown with our cost study, there is a great deal of variation in prices depending on the country you have your transplant done. Some countries have average costs per graft as low as 1.28 USD, with others, like Canada, as high as 7.00 USD.

How can you reduce your hair transplantation costs?

One of the main ways patients choose to reduce their hair transplantation costs is by traveling to another country where the prices are much cheaper. Medical tourism is especially popular for individuals in countries like the US, UK or Canada, which are known to be the most expensive places for hair transplants. You can use our cost study to determine if there is a country which offers lower prices than your own. Our experts would then be happy to assist you in the search for a certified clinic within your price zone in the country of your choosing.

However, there are the additional costs of flight tickets, meal prices, and hotel accommodation to consider when traveling abroad for your procedure. One way to reduce these costs is by doing an appropriate amount of research for flights and hotels, there are many deals and coupons to be found. In addition, many clinics in Turkey off all-inclusive deals which can lower these additional costs. Another effective long-term method to reduce the hair transplant cost is to treat the hair loss with proven medication such as finasteride and minoxidil. By doing so, less grafts need to be transplanted in the future.

How have costs changed over the last decades?

Over the last couple of decades, the average price of hair transplants has decreased considerably. There are several reasons why this has happened. One of the main reasons for the global drop in pricing is, as previously mentioned, is technological advancement and increased competition. With less manual labor involved, these advancements have made hair transplants more affordable and increased the demand greatly.

Due to the increase in demand, there has been a lot of growth in the hair transplantation industry, with more doctors specializing in this field and opening their own clinics. This has led to increased competition domestically, with clinics in the same country fighting to attract patients. One of the easiest ways to do this is lowering the price of their transplant services.

However, due to labor costs and the need to import medical equipment many countries can only lower their prices so much and still make a profit. This is how competition from clinics abroad has grown so prominent. Countries like Turkey are able to manufacture their own equipment, meaning they don’t have to pay additional fees such as shipping and import taxes. They also have much lower labor costs than countries like the US, UK and Canada. These factors give clinics in countries like Turkey the ability to cut their costs far below what the US, UK and Canada are able to.

Hair Transplant Cost Study Design

Our experts have put together the largest cost study for hair transplantation clinics in the world by comparing prices from over 90 different clinics across 11 different countries. We update the study on a yearly basis to integrate all price changes.

While other websites display information regarding global averages, there are no large-scale comparison studies for individual countries. We found this lack of information concerning as many patients choose to travel outside of their home country for a hair transplantation in hopes to save money. It would be quite helpful to have a tool to compare prices and quality of clinics between various countries. Lastly, it is an exhausting and cumbersome process to research individual clinics across different countries, especially when you don’t have previous knowledge about the hair transplantation process and industry.

We conducted our research using information from individual clinics’ websites, where they have displayed information about previous hair transplantations, as well as sending them theoretical cases to evaluate. They responded with the price and number of grafts they believe would be needed for the transplantation. We then added information from these offers to other data we have collected.

There are a number of factors which influence the cost of a hair implant procedure. The variation in prices within a country is largely determined by the number of grafts, the method used to perform the procedure and the experience of the surgeon performing the operation. The study focused on head hair transplants. The overall prices for eyebrow transplants and beard transplants differ. When comparing prices by country however, the variation is due to differences in labor costs, medical standards, the country’s ability to manufacture medical technology, and competition for medical tourism.

Final Summary

We hope this cost study comparison is a useful tool for you to use when seeking a clinic for your hair transplantation. Although hair transplants are among the most expensive cosmetic procedures according to our plastic and cosmetic surgergy statistics, most patients do not regret the treatment and report a positive emotional impact afterwards.

Our experts aim to help you save as much money as possible and have created these tables compiling as many data points as possible from a wide variety of sources in order to achieve this goal. It is important to us that you get an unbiased, comprehensive comparison of as many clinics in as many countries as possible so you are well-informed of your options.
