Hair transplant may be a permanent solution but it cannot stop the hair in other areas of the scalp from falling off due to the presence of DHT. Medications such as minoxidil are taken in order to speed up the results and preserve hair transplant results in the long run. Learn all you need to know about minoxidil, its usage, side effects, and more.

What is Minoxidil and how does it work?

Minoxidil is a hypertensive drug that was originally used to treat high blood pressure or hypertension. That is until patients noticed a change in their hair density after its usage. Since then, minoxidil has been used to treat hair loss in men and women. It is typically sold under the brand name Regaine and is available in the form of a solution, a foam, and oral tablets.

Apart from stabilizing hair loss in patients before they are ready for a hair transplant, minoxidil is also used to speed up results and preserve existing hair after a hair transplant.

Topical Minoxidil (Foam or Solution) – Minoxidil is available as a topical foam or solution that can be directly applied to the scalp. You can find it in two main concentrations that are known to be effective for hair loss i.e. 2% and 5%.

Oral Minoxidil – You can take minoxidil orally in tablet form as well. This method is preferable if you have an allergic reaction or side effect from the topical version. Studies have shown minoxidil tablets to be effective for 66% of the patients using it consistently for 6 to 12 months. Orally, minoxidil may be taken at a dose of 0.625mg to 5mg, depending on your doctor’s prescription.

Should you take minoxidil after a hair transplant?

Since patients with male pattern baldness will continue to lose their natural hair even after a hair transplant, it is important to slow down hair loss to preserve hair density in the long run. Minoxidil prevents hair loss and improves the longevity of your hair transplant results. It is also used to avoid shock loss and speed up the hair transplant results by promoting hair regrowth.

While taking medication such as minoxidil is not necessary, it is highly recommended to get the most out of your hair transplant and prevent the possibility of needing a second transplant procedure.

When can you start using minoxidil after a hair transplant?

After your hair transplant surgery, you can discuss further medication options with your doctor. They may recommend taking minoxidil at least one to two weeks after the surgery to let the hair grafts settle in.
