However, the top five popular surgeries based on our search volume data are different:

The most popular cosmetic surgeries in 2019 for the USA were Breast Augmentation (269,514), Liposuction (242,259), Abdominoplasty (131,652), Breast Lift (121,302) and Eyelid Surgery (113,988) as reported by the ISAPS. In addition, the USA are also the country with most cosmetic surgeons (7,000) according to medihair´s plastic and cosmetic surgery statistics. Based on data from the global survey by the ISAPS the most popular cosmetic procedures in Thailand are Eyelid Surgery (20,286 procedures), Rhinoplasty (14,309 procedures), Breast Augmentation (12,558 procedures), Liposuction (7,169 procedures) and Facial Fat-Grafting (5,670 procedures). Lack of Representation for Hair Transplant Procedures

Little information is included about hair transplants in most plastic surgery association’s surveys or statistical reports. This is due to the fact that most plastic surgeons who perform hair transplants specialize and perform very few other cosmetic surgeries and are not member in organizations such as ISAPS. Plastic surgeons who don’t provide hair transplant procedures will perform several different kinds of cosmetic procedures. This can lead to hair transplantation procedures being greatly underrepresented in surveys performed by these plastic surgery associations.

Nevertheless, corresponding to the medihair hair transplant statistics the number of hair transplants have grown rapidly over the past 10 years:

Further evidence that hair transplants are underrepresented can be seen with the comparison of the statistical data rankings of cosmetic surgeries compared to the search engine volumes. Many of the countries we analyzed have hair transplants listed in the top five search engine terms, yet hair transplants do not appear in the top five survey procedures for any country.

In addition, many experts have even challenged the estimated number of hair transplants per year made by the ISHRS. The hair transplant industry is one of the fastest growing forms of cosmetic procedures, with an increase of 192% from 2008 to 2019. Many experts believe the data in the ISHRS census does not accurately represent the growing hair transplant industry in China and India, partially due to lack of surgeon membership in India and China.

Trends in Cosmetic Surgeries

With the corona pandemic, many working individuals have spent extra time staring at themselves on zoom calls, which many plastic surgeons believe has attributed to the rise in cosmetic surgery inquiries. In addition, it is much easier for people to recover at home from surgeries without taking a significant amount of time off from work. This has created an increase in the demand for cosmetic procedures over the past year.

Hair transplants have seen a dramatic increase of 16% from 2016-2019 according to the ISHRS census, and are one of the fastest growing sections of cosmetic surgeries. Google Trends has also seen an increase in the search engine volume for hair transplants in the last five years. In the United States search engine volume has increased from 66,000 to 87,000 and in the United Kingdom there has been an increase from 46,000 to 71,000. Other procedures such as liposuctions, eyelid surgeries, and facelifts have also seen an increase in popularity in the past several years. On the contrary, nose reshaping and breast augmentation have seen a decreasing trend over the last couple of years.

There has also been an increase in patients from the age groups of 30-39, and over 55. However, there has been a decrease in patients in other age groups of 1-2%.

Summary

The cosmetic surgery industry has grown quite a bit in the last year, with several different contributing factors. Celebrities and the pandemic have had a large influence on this industry, helping to negate the stigma surrounding patients who want cosmetic surgery. In addtion, according to our latest hair transplant cost study the prices for hair restoration at least have become cheaper and cheaper in recent decades.

We expect a further strong growth of the hair transplant industry. Social media influencers and celebrities have made hair transplants socially acceptable. Nevertheless, it should not be misunderstood that hair transplantation is still a surgical procedure with risks.
